08896 in main line service
08896 was built at Horwich Works and entered BRBritish Rail or British Railways service as D4126 in April 1962 at Ebbw Junction (Newport), moving to Landore in May 1969. In June 1974 D4126 became No 08896 under the TOPSTotal Operations Processing System, an American computer system adopted by BR from the late 1960s to number and manage rolling stock. numbering scheme, and carried BRBritish Rail or British Railways Blue bodywork with a full yellow cab front by the end of 1975.
By 1991 it was noted in Bristol and it became an EWSEnglish, Welsh & Scottish Railway, a rail freight company loco after privatisation. It was regularly used as the parcels pilot and around the Bristol area. It was named Stephen Dent in September 1997, after a local railway worker.
It was withdrawn from service in February 2004.[1] It was later noted stored at Toton[2].
08896 in preservation
08896 arrived on the SVRSevern Valley Railway in late 2009, missing its centre pair of wheels. The SVRSevern Valley Railway web site shows a status of “For parts retrieval at Kidderminster”.[3] Its engine block is thought to be in reasonable order.[4] It has been subsequently moved around the Kidderminster site as space allowed. In 2024 it was 'increasingly becoming an eyesore' and was removed from the Kidderminster turntable area to Kidderminster Carriage Shed for further storage[5].
Model
Hornby produced an OO gauge model (ref. R2111) of 08896 Stephen Dent in EWSEnglish, Welsh & Scottish Railway, a rail freight company maroon & yellow livery in 1999[6].
