The Society was formed to operate the Coalyard Miniature Railway from 1988.

The Coalyard Miniature Railway Model Engineering Society is an affiliated body of the Federation of Model Engineering Societies. Its previous website showed the Society to have five members. Brian Shaw helped start the Coalyard Miniature Railway in 1988, and died 16 May 2017.[1]

Thanks to their passengers the Society donates funds to other bodies on the SVRSevern Valley Railway. In 2017 this included the SVR Share Offer for Bridgnorth Station, Severn Valley Railway Charitable Trust Ltd, The Erlestoke Manor Fund, Stanier 8F Locomotive Society, Class 08 diesel fund, the Great Western (SVR) Association, The 4150 Fund and others.[2]
