The wagon remained in service with the GWRGreat Western Railway and later BRBritish Rail or British Railways(W) until 1984, when it was sent to Barry Scrapyard. It was rescued from there and arrived on the SVRSevern Valley Railway on 16 August 1984. Examination revealed that the frame had previously cracked in two places and that welded repairs carried out by BRBritish Rail or British Railways had begun to crack again. The defective welds were ground out and re-welded, a repaint carried out and the wagon released for P-Way service.[3]
In 1985, 42138 appeared on the main line when it was used in the GW 150 demonstration freight train which ran to Newport behind GWR freight loco 2857.[4]
It is owned by The GWR 813 Preservation Fund and is one of only two surviving LoriotGWR telegraphic code signifying a machine truck Ds[5].
