Carriage type BG (Brake Gangwayed) designates a carriage with a Guard's compartment and other storage space. The carriage has no passenger seating, although a gangway allows passengers to pass through it.
Following the introduction of TOPSTotal Operations Processing System, an American computer system adopted by BR from the late 1960s to number and manage rolling stock. in the late 1960s, BRBritish Rail or British Railways carriages of this class were allocated the TOPS code NAV, denoting:
N: Non-passenger carrying stock
A: Gangwayed brake
V: Vacuum brake
