Michael Ernest (Mike) Ball (b. November 1943) became chairman of SVR(H) in succession to Nick Paul in September 2021.

Mike worked for Honeywell of the USA and for Bull of France in a career spanning 35 years. Prior to taking early retirement Mike’s role was Bull’s Director of Customer Services for the UK and Ireland, a multi-million pound business with a staff of some 800 people.

He joined the Railway as a volunteer in 1986. He was chairman of the operating committee for seven years and was heavily involved in the fundraising following the 2007 storm damage, becoming a director. He became deputy chairman in 2011. He subsequently led the development of the SVRSevern Valley Railway’s working relationships with main line train operating companies.

He was one of a group of three volunteers, with Roger Smith and Tony Bending, who stood in for the general manager before Nick Ralls was appointed in 2007.

He was also a director of the guarantee company between 26 July 2003 and 18 March 2014[1].
