D2957 is one of a number of 165 h.p. diesel shunters at the SVR.  It was built by Ruston and Hornsby of Lincoln as works number 319290 of 1953 for use by Robertson Thain at their Ellesmere Port ironworks, and since 1960 by B.I.P. Chemicals at Langley Green.

319290 was the first Ruston and Hornsby shunter acquired by the SVR, being purchased from B.I.P by [[Severn Valley Railway (Holdings) PLC | SVR(H)]] in March 1972.  Originally the locomotive had no number other than its works number 319290, although it was commonly referred to as the “Red Ruston”.  It saw regular use in the SVR’s early days on Engineers’ trains, but as of 2015 it acts as yard shunter in [[Bewdley Down Yard]] where it carries a BR livery with the number D2957.  It is maintained by the [[Bewdley Carriage & Wagon Department]].
