47383 was built for the LMSLondon Midland & Scottish Railway by the Vulcan Foundry at Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire as Works No 3954 of 1926, and entered service that year as LMSLondon Midland & Scottish Railway Number 7383. It first worked in the London freight yards before moving to Chester. Following nationalisation, it was renumbered 47383 by BRBritish Rail or British Railways, who rated the class 3FThe British Railways system of classifying steam locomotives by power using a number from 0, least powerful, to 9, most powerful, followed by either F for freight, P for Passenger or MT for Mixed Traffic..

The locomotive was withdrawn from service in October 1967.[1]

47383 in preservation

47383 was the 5th locomotive to join the SVRSevern Valley Railway, arriving in May 1968 some two years before the official opening. The locomotive saw regular use, repairs and overhauls excepted, from the 1970s through to its last steaming in 2002 (including a couple of seasons running as 'Thomas' due to an overhaul being carried out on 686 The Lady Armaghdale).

As of 2016 47383 is on display in The Engine House awaiting overhaul. It is owned by the Manchester Rail Travel Society.
