Carriage Type TK designates a Third Class Corridor Coach. A corridor coach is one divided into separate compartments, with a corridor down one side to allow free movement along the train and between compartments.

In early railway carriages such as Barry Railway Carriage 163, the compartment occupied the full width of the train, hence this type of carriage is often referred to as a 'compartment coach'. The corridor coach began to be introduced around the start of the 20th century, mainly to enable passengers to move through the train to use dining cars which were being introduced at the time.

The SVRSevern Valley Railway has GWRGreat Western Railway and LMSLondon Midland & Scottish Railway pre-war design examples of third class corridor coaches. The Post-War BRBritish Rail or British Railways equivalent was the Mark 1 Standard Corridor (SK), although BRBritish Rail or British Railways continued a move towards the use of 'open' carriages which the pre-War companies had already begun.
