Model Railway and Tramway exhibitions

This page give details of Model Railway and Tramway exhibitions hosted by the SVRSevern Valley Railway, either as a discrete event or as part of another. Model railway layouts have often been an attraction at events such as Peep Behind the Scenes and the Open House Weekend, with venues including The Engine House, Kidderminster Railway Museum and the Diesel Depot.
It excludes miniature railways such as those at the early preservation era Open Weekends and the Coalyard Miniature Railway.
Model railway exhibitions
In July 2012, the third Peep Behind the Scenes included an "exhibition of small privately-owned model railways" upstairs in Kidderminster Railway Museum.[note 1].
In August 2013 the SVRSevern Valley Railway held a two-day "Vintage Toy and Train Expo" at The Engine House..
The first Open House Weekend on 16-17 April 2016 included 12 layouts at The Engine House and Kidderminster Railway Museum. These were advertised as:
- Broadwater Junction - based on a coastal or estuary line, trains pass a disused wharf and a junction for a branch into the hills. With thanks to Warley MRC N Gauge Group
- Steam on the Cambrian - two layouts into one: the Cambrian Coast Railway pre 1965 at Morfa Bach, continuing to Penmaenpool MPDMotive Power Depot. With thanks to Frank Collins
- Brewery Lane - a compact 009 narrow gauge layout with a small brewery in an industrial area. With thanks to Ellesmere Model Railway Club
- Meres & Mosses Light Railway - based upon Ellesmere Wharf, a 009 narrow gauge layout connecting the Wharf, via the Mere to Whixall Moss's peat workings. With thanks to Ellesmere Model Railway Club
- Arrowmouth - a seaside town on the North West coast featuring the London North Western mainline before electrification between 1963 and 1968. With thanks to The Redditch Model Railway Club
- Gravelly Lane - fictional narrow gauge locomotive, serving a quarry based in the Midlands. With thanks to Ben Powell
- East Wheal Dream - possibly part of the Cornwall Mineral Railway in the 1920s, with an emphasis on the typical buildings, each built a stone at a time. With thanks to Keith Thompson
- Bridgnorth - based on our own Station in Bridgnorth, pre-preservation in the 1950s and 1960s. With thanks to Anthony Minchin, West Midlands 'N' Gauge Club

- Victoria Bridge - the iconic structure on the Severn Valley Railway in miniature. With thanks to Will Jarman
- Bewdley - based on our own Station in Bewdley in the preservation era, modelled in 'N' gauge. With thanks to TMRG.
- Llantwy - '009' narrow gauge layout depicting a Welsh country town in the 1930s. With thanks to David Jeanes.
The layouts at the second Open House Weekend on 8-9 April 2017 were displayed at The Engine House and the newly opened Diesel Depot. They were advertised as:
- Chollerford - '00' gauge layout based on Humshaugh Station which was situated on the former Border Counties/North British line from Hexham to Riccarton Jcn. With thanks to David Milford.
- Oakenshaw - a fictitious West Yorkshire mill town set in the 1960s somewhere near to the real town of Keighley on the Airedale line. With thanks to Redditch MRC.
- Castel Del Monte - based on the old 75cm narrow gauge railway that ran between Girona and Sant Feliu in Spain, the layout features scratch-built steam locomotives n a village station scene. With thanks to Keith Thompson.
- The Abingdon Branch - an attractive '00' gauge layout inspired by its namesake, The Abingdon Branch has a great deal of operational and modelling interest. With thanks to Ivan Cadge.
- Werrington Road - a small modern image layout depicting part of a steel works and the branch line along the grassy embankment that serves it. With thanks to Neil Favell.
- Franwood TMDTraction Maintenance Depot, also referred to as Diesel Depot - '00' gauge fictional modern traction depot based loosely in the Black Country area of the West Midlands, operating traction from the 1970s to 1990s. With thanks to Neil Woodbine.
- Barnstoneworth - set in deepest West Yorkshire, the branch line train arrives at the station passing through the town, football pitch and tunnel. With thanks to Edward Farms.
- Little Aller Junction - running mostly diesel-hauled trains, the Junction is situated between two tunnels, so there's lots to see. With thanks to Chris Morris.
- Ashburton - depicting the much-missed terminus of the Great Western Railway's branchline along the River Dart from Totnes to Ashburton. With thanks to Tony Minchin.
- Illie Town TMDTraction Maintenance Depot, also referred to as Diesel Depot - modern image layout, including a two platform station, depot, ballast siding, steel warehouse and fuel point, you may even catch a glimpse of a Class 172/2! With thanks to Aaz Smith.
- Thornton Gate Tramway - scratch built 'N' gauge prototypical Blackpool tramway layout, based on Blackpool's former P'way sidings. With thanks to Tom Williamson.
- Burford - a 1930s 'HO' gauge Cotswold GWRGreat Western Railway branchline, built in the 1930s, and reworked in the 1970s! With thanks to Warley MRC.
- Hergest - a secondary interchange between the standard and narrow gauge railways serving Hergest on the GWRGreat Western Railway Leominster to New Radnor branch. With thanks to Peter Cullen.
- Bowlegget Manor - '009' gauge layout in the grounds of Bowlegget Manor, with passengers being carried through the old quarry on the estate. With thanks to Peter Cullen.
- Brandeight - depicting all that remains of a 2ft 3in gauge light railway built by a late 19th Century industrialist and now running as a heritage railway. With thanks to Peter Hardy.
- Bradford City Road - a busy terminus station with a large canopy, reached through soot-stained stone high retaining walls in a typical West Yorkshire urban scene. With thanks to David Harris.
- Timber Valley - set somewhere in the Valleys of Yorkshire; the local community work at the sawmill, the branchline heads off into the hills and the station takes passengers to the mainline. With thanks to Dale Gillard.
- Bournville Shed - running trains from 1939 through to the closure of the shed in 1960, the layout includes a number of recognisable features from the Birmingham West Suburban Railway. With thanks to Bournville MRC.
- Todmorden Midland - 'N' gauge West Yorkshire terminus set in the 1950s with steam and diesel. With thanks to Ed Purcell.
- Badgers Quay - GWRGreat Western Railway/Southern Railway terminus station next to the harbour, modelled in '00' gauge. With thanks to Roy Peddar.
- St Andrews Road - making one of its first exhibition appearances; a 1960s BRBritish Rail or British Railways London Midland region motive power depot with branchline. With thanks to Ben Davies.
- Earl's Court - an LMSLondon Midland & Scottish Railway and GWRGreat Western Railway joint station in the London Suburbs, featuring commuter and passenger trains pasing through and alongside the parcels depot and dairy. With thanks to Terence Tew.
- Meres & Mosses - based upon Ellesmere Wharf; a '009' narrow gauge layout connecting the Wharf, via the Mere to Whixall Moss's peat workings. With thanks to Ellesmere Model Railway Club.

- Stoney Hill West - a fictional location in southern Ontario served by the Canadian PacificLocomotive with a 4-6-2 wheel configuration Railway in the 1990's with a small freight yard served, engine depot and factory sidings accessed from the yard.
- Black Road - '0' gauge live-steam fictitious preserved railway, operated by a fleet of small industrial locomotives; featuring Pecketts, Hudswell Clarkes and many more. With thanks to Brian Caton.
- Studley & Astwood Bank - the countryside by-way in the steam and diesel era on a 'U' shaped layout. With thanks to Steve Monk.
- Funicular Railway - entering the model railway circuit in 2017, the arduino-controlled OO-scale funicular railway is being built by a father and son team and is like nothing else attending the event. With thanks to Nicholas Bond.
The third Open House Weekend on 7-8 April 2018 featured over 30 layouts at the Diesel Depot and The Engine House. On 21-22 July Kidderminster station hosted a "HUGE model railway" running under the canopy.
The Vintage Transport Extravaganza on 7-8 August 2021 included a live steam O gauge model railway on the concourse. Also, from 2021 an O Gauge Autumn Model Railway Weekend was held. The September 2021 event arose from the COVID-19 cancellation of the Gauge O Guild’s ‘Guildex’ exhibition, following which a small group of SVRSevern Valley Railway volunteers successfully organised an impromptu ‘O Gauge Get Together’ event. An expanded September 2022 event featured nine layouts, and trade and modellers’ group stands.
In May 2022 a Spring Model Railway Weekend was held, split from the Open House Weekend. 27 layouts were in attendance in scales from 009 to 0. Highlights included Cregwir, a layout based on the Island of Sodor with characters from The Railway Series, including Thomas, Stepney, Bear and Wilbert. Other layouts on display were a ‘have a go’ live steam layout with LNERLondon & North Eastern Railway A4s, Halfpenny Green with engines local to Worcester, and Campbell’s Quarry, where a crane scooped sand up, dropped it into wagons before it was dropped off further up the line.
The Manchester Model Tramway Group have displayed their layout at The Engine House on a number of occasions between 2015 and 2020. The Group’s fully-operating miniature tramway layout was the brainchild of George Oakley, who first exhibited the tramway in 1949 and who had a keen interest in both the Manchester and Llandudno & Colwyn Bay tramway systems. It is built to a unique 5/8" to 1' gauge, with models hand-built by its members. Visits have included:
- 16-22 February 2015 (half term week)
- 16-17 April 2016 (Open House Weekend)
- 18-26 February 2017 (half term week)
- 17-25 February 2018 (half term week)
- 15-23 February 2020 (half term week)
Former resident GWR Toplight 'Snake C' Passenger Brake 1150 arrived at Bewdley in May 1981, having been acquired for preservation by Alastair Kerr to house a model railway layout. The N-gauge layout, which was named "Wribbenhall Junction", was fully automatic and had up to nine trains running simultaneously. Over the next 23 years it attracted around 300,000 visitors.
In July 2004 the Birmingham Post ran an article noting the impending closure of the display due to a shortage of volunteers to help Alastair to operate it. Following its closure, GWRGreat Western Railway 1150 left the SVRSevern Valley Railway a short time later.
