BRBritish Rail or British Railways Mark 2e Brake Second Open (BSO) 9497 was built at Derby in 1972 to diagram number 108 of lot number 30838. It has 32 seats.[1]

9497 in preservation

After BRBritish Rail or British Railways service it was purchased by 2012 by Northumbria Rail for use at the Waverley Route's site at Whitrope Summit. However, by arrangement it went to Mid-Norfolk Railway (MNR) with 9538 instead going to Whitrope. It is one of a rake of Mark 2 vehicles operated by Eastern Rail Services (ERS) and based on the MNR, where it is used on services. The rake is also from time-to-time hired to other railways, in particular the Weardale Railway for their Polar Express trains.[2][3]

9497 at the SVRSevern Valley Railway

One such hire was in May 2017 to the SVRSevern Valley Railway for the Spring Diesel Festival, its air-braking capability being used by visiting mainline locomotives. 9497 was painted in BRBritish Rail or British Railways Intercity livery.
